Camping at Weaver Lake Group site, September 2020

This year’s Labour Day trip to the Weaver Lake Group site was again planned back in January, so we had no idea that we’d be right in the middle of COVID-19 for this camping trip. We decided to keep the group a bit smaller than last year’s since a few people had already bowed out.

There was a little anxiety about how the kids would be interacting with each other. The adults can easily enough social distance, but it’s a bit tougher for the kids to understand. Overall the kids did well, and minus a few moments where the whole gang got excited, or the kids started playing with each other’s toys, things went over quite well.

Katie’s 41st birthday landed on the Thursday before, so we headed up a day early to stay an extra night before the crowd showed up. We had a little festivity of our own at the table, and we also brought up some pre-packaged Vachon cakes to hand out to anybody that wanted them. Certainly, there was to be no blowing out of candles like last year.

The water was a tad on the chilly side, but the kids did eventually get in and had a great time.

We moved over to the group site on the other side of the lake the following afternoon, but first jumped in the water since it was already getting pretty warm, and it wasn’t even noon.

The weather was a little meh. It started off sunny on Thursday and Friday, and then it was overcast most of Saturday and Sunday. The sun fought to come out most of the weekend, but it was pleasant and pretty warm. Nobody went home with sunburns though — so there was an upside.

We had our canoe with us, so we spent some time going around the lake and making the trip over to a faraway beach.

On Sunday evening, Matt loaned us his fishing boat to take the kids out on, and they loved riding in the ‘speedboat,’ as they call it. Mom let both Addison and Colin hold and drive the boat all by themselves, and they were ecstatic to do so.

The kids wanted to go for a little walk before going to bed, so we took off down the path of the dark forest.
Not sure who taught Addison this look…
Addison and Colin both got to drive Matt’s ‘speedboat’ — it’s the furthest thing from it, and it’s 5HP engine doesn’t have much juice, but it sure was fun.

This year’s group was smaller than the previous year, so we were able to spread out a bit to shoot the group photo.
